The Insecurity Of The Rfid Chip

The more the federal government passes laws to insure my security, the more insecure I feel. Let’s take the government’s proposed use of RFID technology as an example of my concern.

RFID stands for radio frequency identification. The RFID chip is a minature device that has a very small chip attached to a tiny antenna. When the chip hears a specific radio signal, it responds with information, usually a long identification number. The chips, also called tags, are used in the private sector for many information tracking functions including inventory management, EKG carts in hospitals, cash-free toll booths, the movement of shipping containers, library books, credit cards, and even tires. The military currently uses these chips in Iraq and has used RFID technology since World War II.

The United States government has become more involved in the technology for security purposes. The Real ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005. The law requires standardized driver’s licenses, passports, and identification cards with machine readable data to be in place throughout the country by December 2009. The technology being used is RFID.

The problem with this proposed timeframe is that the Federal Government has not finalized the laws requirements and has not indicated how much it will pay of the estimated 11 billion dollar cost of the program over the next 5 years. There are logistical issues involved in the implementation as well. An analysis by the National Governors Association and the National Conference of State Legislatures cast doubt about the viability of getting every licensed driver to the Department Of Motor Vehicles to verify identification documents within a five-year time period.

The Real ID Act has its opponents. Maine, Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Missouri, Montana, Maine, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Dakota, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Washington have passed legislation opposing Real ID. These states worry about an individual’s loss of privacy and liberty.

The states worry that personal privacy may be violated because RFID technology could be subject to both virus and information theft. This is because the chips work similar to a smart card. The problem is that they can be read from a distance. A receiving device can “talk” to the chip remotely, without any need for physical contact, and get whatever information is on it.

Passport officials envision being able to download the information on the chip simply by bringing it within a few centimeters of an electronic reader. Unfortunately, RFID chips can be read by any reader, not just the ones at passport control. The dubious result of this is that travelers carrying around RFID passports (and eventually drivers licenses) are broadcasting their identity. In tests, RFID chips have been read by receivers 20 meters away.

However, there are even bigger concerns about RFID technology than its use in drivers licenses or passports. For years, RFID chips have been implanted in the bodies of pets to keep track of stray animals. There is a company called Verichip that has received FDA approval and manufactures a chip for the human being to store emergency medical information. The chip can be implanted in the thumb or arm of a person. Verichip has implanted the chip in about 50 people. The company also markets an implant chip in South America as a way to track potential kidnap victims.

Further, consider the use of RFID chips by Cincinnati based Citywatch.com. The private video surveillance company has embedded Verichip silicon RFID chips in two of its employees. The company is using the technology to control an employee’s access to physical locations in order to keep classified information secure. This is the first instance in which workers have been chipped as a way of identification.

RFID chips have been used in humans in other countries. Chips have been implanted in more than 2000 nightclub patrons in Barcelona, Spain, and Rotterdam, Netherlands for access to the club’s amenities and an easy way to pay for the club’s services. Credit card companies have been closely following the technology for several years as a potential way for chip-implanted customers to make secure purchases through their credit cards.

Former Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson is now on the Board of Directors of Verichip. Thompson is excited about the company’s technology and sees a big future for the implant of the chip in humans for all their medical data storage.

Verichip’s (Human implant RFID) chip has raised concerns from civil libertarians and state governments. Last month, Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation banning employers from requiring employees to be implanted with RFID tags. The bill’s sponsor State Senator Joe Simitian (D- Palo Alto), condemned human tagging as the ultimate invasion of privacy.

If you are interested in the storage of your health records in a chip in your body, the VeriChip implant procedure costs about $200 in your doctor’s office. As for me, call me old fashioned, since I will continue to use the health card in my wallet. However, due to the passage of the Real ID act, to insure my personal security, my next passport and drivers license may have to be wrapped in aluminum foil.

The note asks the WG to -assess the impact of special programmes for the LWE areas, being implemented over the past 5-6 years- and -review implementation of provisions under the Fifth Schedule and PESA, 1996, the Scheduled Tribe and Other Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act 2006, and the Prevention of Atrocities Act.-

The Pentavalent vaccine, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s latest addition to the immunisation programme, has run into a storm. The vaccine is no stranger to controversy. A mix of five vaccines to fight childhood diseases like diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, Hepatitis B, pneumonia and meningitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae Type B, its roll-out in nine States has been opposed after infant deaths were reported post vaccination. The Supreme Court has sent a notice to the Ministry asking why the vaccine should not be banned in the country. Vaccines are known to be safe and one of the best preventive tools to protect children from disease. In India, nearly three-and-a-half lakh children die of pneumonia and meningitis every year and the best way to save these lives is a vaccine.

This is with reference to an article published by you. You may have learned recently of the accusations against Inspector General (IG) of Greyhounds, PSR Anjaneyulu, fondly called PSR/Anjan. As CP he reduced campus violence by enforcing the removal of `loyalty’ stickers from motor bikes, carried out a drive against ragging, removed decades’ old names of `history-sheeters’ from crime registers so that they could lead a normal life, broke the back-bone of -blade criminals’ involved in thefts and injuring people and generally made life secure for people of Vijayawada. He also brought about a change within the police department ensuring that those coming to file complaints or facing charges were treated decently by being greeted and offered water. This did not go down well with many criminal elements and others. In the light of this it is not surprising that he was embroiled in the SMS scandal where he has been accused of harassing a lady doctor. In a bout of irresponsible reporting the media has sensationalized the issue and have tarnished the image of an honest officer. PSR had also rubbed a prominent politician the wrong way by reprimanding him for holding a press conference in the CP’s office and by refusing to give him additional security when he was out of power. It is alleged that he is the one who is orchestrating the current campaign against PSR. Here are some facts to establish tarnishing of PSR image: All SMS sent by PSR were in reply to the lady doctor’s SMS. PSR, being a seasoned officer had figured out the plot. But, he chose to come before the people, because he had nothing to fear about and had done nothing wrong. Those familiar with his ways of his functioning also know that he makes himself highly accessible to each and every citizen, to the extent of giving away his cell phone number, to ensure that everyone who needs his help is able to reach him. The timing of the scandal is also questionable, as PSR had already applied for a long leave just four days before his eventual transfer to Hyderabad. Television host Luis Manzano remains ready to defend ex-girlfriend Angel Locsin against guys who will treat her unfairly.

Manzano made these remarks after it was reported that Azkals football player Phil Younghusband only asked Angel for a Valentines date because it was a dare from his team mates.

Phil immediately cleared the issue and said that he really likes Angel and no one pushed him to ask the actress out on Twitter.

Krista Ranillo yes, Im Pregnant

WEDDING bells rang last Sunday, August 8, as actress Krista Ranillo married Island Pacific Supermarket CEO Jefferson (Jeff)

Nio Lim in an intimate ceremony held at the Hotel Maya in Long Beach, California. The couple, who were married in a garden Jewish interfaith ceremony, only invited around 120 close friends and family, successfully avoiding a media circus and opting for a highly private affair.

Ranillo and Lim are childhood sweethearts who reunited when they met again several years later. They have always been private about their relationship, with Ranillo telling BALITA MEDIA in an interview last June only that her boyfriend was a “businessman.”

But now that the wedding is over and out in the open, Ranillo is ready to tell her story.

“We met when we were younger, we’re more of kababatas,” Ranillo tells BALITA MEDIA.

“Our families are good friends. We were able to catch up late last year when I spent a longer time here in the States. He was such a good friend and listener to me. We’d hang out and have dinner, watch movies, nothing romantic really but we were building a friendship.”

But of course, what started out as a meaningful friendship became something much more.

“For me, I was just happy being with him it didn’t matter what we did or where we were but being in his very presence made me feel happy already,” Ranillo says when asked how she knew Jeff was “the One”.

“There were times when I made excuses to my mom so I could come home late (sorry mom!) and spend the whole day with him. I also realized that aside from being a great friend, there were so many qualities in him that I admired. I always tell people that nakahanap ako ng katapat ko. I like that he’s smart and very sensible he provides stability and order in my life and I provide the fun and craziness in his. We really complement each other.

And of course, he’s cute so that adds 2,000 pogi points!,” Ranillo laughs.

During the ceremony, Ranillo was walked down the aisle by her father, actor Mat Ranillo III, to the traditional tune of Canon D. Her wedding gown was made by David Tupaz, Kristas cousin.

“We both saw that the Jewish ceremony had meaningful rituals that symbolized the union of husband and wife. We wanted a unique and meaningful ceremony.”

In fact, this desire for a “unique” ceremony carried over to the entire wedding, with the couple opting for a much more contemporary celebration than your typical wedding reception.

“We were only planning it [the wedding] for a couple of weeks,” Krista shares.

“I wanted the venue to be hip, modern and fun. We wanted a private and intimate wedding so that we could be ourselves.”

Guests were treated to such private details as Ranillos personal wedding playlist, which included romantic tunes like “Love Story” by Taylor Swift, “Ill Be” by Edwin McCain and “Viva la Vida” by Coldplay. Guests enjoyed Mexican and Latin American cuisine prepared by award-winning Executive Chef Jesse Perez of the Hotel Maya, and giveaways included wine bottles emblazoned with “Blame it on the Alcohol” (a reference to Jamie Foxxs hit song of the same title) and candy bars that had M&Ms with the couples picture and names printed on it.

Guests dined outdoors with the Long Beach skyline as their view, and boarded a yacht for the latter part of the evening. They went on a four hour cruise complete with a club-themed setup, dancing to the music of DJ Tommy T (Tom Taus) until the wee hours of the morning. While the dancing took place on the upper deck of the yacht, guests also let loose with videoke on the lower deck. And of course, it was an open bar all night long.

“It was fun!”, Ranillo says simply.

“I really enjoyed both our weddings. The first one [a civil ceremony in Norwalk, Connecticut last July 14], it was just the two of us and we ate at a burger place afterwards. It was really intimate. The second wedding was meaningful too because we had our friends and families present.”

Although Ranillo is perhaps best known for her role in “Wapakman” opposite boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao, and the subsequent rumors of an affair with the now Sarangani congressman, it would seem that this controversial part of her life is now firmly in the past. In an interview with Philippine Star, Manny himself commented on the wedding, saying, “I wish them well.”

“I just want to clarify that some people are thinking that we got married because I’m expecting. It’s not true, we got married July 14 and at that time I was not pregnant yet,” Ranillo says.

“I married a good man and I’m looking forward to building a life with him I’m so excited for things to come.”

So whats next for the young couple? Ranillo tells BALITA MEDIA that now that she is based here in the U.S., she is quitting show business.

But she makes it clear that she has no regrets.

“I miss my work but I decided that I wanted something different, a quieter and more peaceful life away from the limelight,” Ranillo reflects.
